About CarRateCheck and our methodology
CarRateCheck, operated by Ian Balekdjian, is an independent resource on US car insurance costs. It offers state-by-state averages, a free estimate calculator and educational guides.
Where the data comes from
State figures are monthly average premiums from Insurify state averages, November 2026, for full coverage and liability only. Alaska is missing from the November 2026 source table, so we use its October 2026 figures ($97 full coverage, $59 liability only, per month). We did not collect these prices ourselves and cannot verify every underlying assumption. Averages are also tied to the source's own driver and coverage assumptions, so they will not match every driver.
The "average across states" ($174 for full coverage and $98 for liability only) is the simple mean of the 51 figures in our table. It is not weighted by population or number of drivers, so it is not the average American driver's premium. Rankings run from 1, the most expensive, by full-coverage average, and states with equal averages share a rank.
How estimates work
The calculator multiplies your state's average by five factors: age, driving record, credit, vehicle and mileage. It then shows a range of 18% either side. The factors are simplified illustrations we chose ourselves. They are not based on any insurer's filed rates. You can review every step of the estimate on the calculator page. An estimate is not a quote, and only an insurer can give a binding quote.
How the site makes money
We may earn money from Google AdSense advertising and from affiliate links, which pay us a commission if you use them. Ads and sponsored links are labeled, and neither changes the state figures or the calculator. Read our advertising and affiliate disclosure for details.
What we are not
We are not an insurance company, agent or broker and do not sell insurance or issue quotes. We do not recommend a specific insurer or policy, and nothing on this site is insurance, legal or financial advice. Your state insurance department is a good source for official information.
